The Emergency Room

So, this weekend turned out to be a lot different then we had planned. Saturday, we worked on Christmas presents and went shopping for a few last minute things. Then we thought we would go over the Chad's parents house and hang out for awhile, then come home and wrap Isabella's presents after she went to bed. Well, we went to Clark and Linda's, ate dinner, and gave Isabella a cookie (one with a Hershey's kiss in the middle). She ate all the chocolate first and had it all over, took a couple bites of the cookie (thank goodness she didn't eat all of it), and then got down. About a minute later, Tiffani picked her up and noticed her bottom lip was swolen. I looked at her lip and immediately grabbed some Tylenol, which was the only thing I had. Then we rushed her to the Emergency Room. Turns out the cookie was a peanut butter cookie. We had only given Isy peanut butter one other time when she was about one, and she got a little rash on her face so we were waiting until she was 18 months old to give her more just to be on the safe side. We hadn't been very clear about it though I guess with everyone. Plus her reaction was very mild. Her cousin Luke gets a rash from cinnamon and isn't allergic, and since their rashes looked the same, we hadn't made that big of a deal about it because we thought it might just have been a skin sensitivity. Now we know for sure that she is allergic!

On the way to the Hospital, Isy started coughing and it took her a really long time to catch her breath. It was so scary because I didn't have an EpiPen, and if her airways closed up there was not much I could do for her. Luckily she did catch her breath, but Chad called 911 and they called the hospital to let them know we were on our way (smart Chad). She actually was pretty okay the rest of the short drive to the hospital. She thought it was fun I was sitting in the back next to her. She kept smiling at me and even started humming, which was hilarious because her bottom lip was huge : ) She was not happy to be at the doctor. They gave her an IV and medicine, and watched her until she was doing well enough to come home. The swelling has gone down a lot, and she is normal this morning. We missed church so she could sleep as long as she needed to from all the medicine (and I forgot to set an alarm). I will now always have an EpiPen and Benadryl with me, and we are going to a peanut butter free house. We are so lucky that everything turned out okay. We will definitely enjoy this Christmas a lot more! We hope everyone else enjoys their Holiday and spending time with their families!

P.S. The pics are from Chad's cell phone so they aren't very clear, but you can tell her lip is huge!
